The orange peel effect is when your paint job is textured quite literally like the skin of an orange. This is a common paint job failure that is normally caused by a number of factors including the use of improper painting techniques, incorrect spray gun setup (ie. incorrect nozzle or low air pressure setups), and premature evaporation of the thinner.
In addition to those, other factors include spraying paint incorrectly(i.e at an angle rather than perpendicularly) and applying excessive paint. All these factors are regarded as human error. It goes without saying that the fish eye reaction is normally caused by improper preparation of the car's body surface beforehand, the effects of the old finish, and the use of silicone-containing polishes in proximity to the spray area.
Another primary cause is the contamination of the painting by grease, wax, oil or silicone. Having said that, the fish eye reaction defect in cars' paint jobs can be resolved by letting the surface dry before rubbing it down using a wet & dry abrasive paper wetted with a solution of warm water and the right detergent.
Tiger stripes appear as an uneven distribution of metal flakes on the surface that has been coated with paint. This paintwork failure is usually common with paint jobs that involve the use of a paint product with a considerable metallic effect. Tiger stripes will definitely ruin your paint job and the look of your car. It goes without saying that there are many factors that can lead to this undesirable outcome in a paint job.
They include an improper paint gun pressure setup, incorrect metallic paint preparation, improper spray gun usage, and repainting your car too soon when your car's existing coats haven't completely fizzled out. The good news is that tiger stripes can be dealt with by wet sanding them out with special products and repainting the car appropriately.
Why pay over $1000 when you can do it yourself?
Drips, runs, and sags are a group of defects in paint jobs for cars that are quite common. Characterized by downward movements of the paint, which can appear shortly after the paint job, these car body paint spoilers can be attributed to a number of causes. Some of the causes include the application of the paint in excess of the specified dry film thickness, improper mixing of paint components and using incorrect spraying techniques. The good news is that drips, runs, and sags can be fixed by taking out the entire coating and repainting the car's body surface properly.
Pinholes appear as tiny holes in the just concluded paint job due to improper sanding of solvent boils in lower paint layers. Craters, on the other hand, are small round recesses that form on the painted surface. These defects in a paint job can be caused by residues of oil, grease, wax and/or silicone, incorrect use of anti-silicone additives, and the use of unsuitable hardeners to harden the film. It's worth noting that pinholes and craters can be avoided by lowering the surface tension of the painting solution.
Bleeding is another common paint job failure that is characterized by the seeping or diffusion of a soluble dye from the surface of the body of a car through the uppermost layer of the coating. Notorious for causing a spot-like yellowish or reddish discoloration of the topcoat, this paint defect is a mistake commonly made by painters who unskilled, unexperienced and not well equipped. Some of its major causes include the use of improper dye products with insufficient solvent resistance, inadequate mixing of the hardener with the paint solution and incorrect surface cleaning.
Apart from those, bleeding can also be a result of soluble dyes from the old paintwork dissolving in the solvent of the new paint. The remedy for this paint job defect is to let dry thoroughly, sand and seal the body surface of your car well before repainting. When you learn to paint cars, bleeding is a paint job defect that's quite easy to avoid.
Soft and uncured paint is a paint job failure that occurs when the coating dries on the uppermost layer but remains soft in the beneath layers such that pressing the coating will leave a fingerprint on the work. Causes of this paint job defect include insufficient drying time, excessive coating thickness, drying hindered by high humidity and low temperatures and slow solvent evaporation due to poor ventilation. Avoiding the causes of soft and uncured painting is the best way to achieve a nice paint job without this defect.
Solvent popping is another typical coating defect that accompanies paint jobs completed by unskilled painters. Visible in the form of small bubbles on the exterior surface of the coating, the defect occurs when the coating solvent begins to evaporate before the coating has been fully applied. Having said that, refinishing the coating using the right topcoat or undercoat can make this defect go away.
Paint blistering is another paint job defect that is characterized by the formation of tiny to large bubbles at the paint/substrate interface. Blistering causes adhesion failure and can cause significant damage to your paint job. While attributed to a number of factors, the common cause of paint blistering is a contaminant of some kind left on the body surface of the car after cleaning in preparation for a paint job. To get rid of this paint defect, remove the blisters by sanding down to the bare surface. After that, prime all bare areas with a recommended primer before repainting the surface.
Sand scratches are another car body paint failure that may occur if the car was sanded with an excessively coarse abrasive. Apart from that, sand scratches can form if the drying times for the undercoat materials weren't observed properly. Finally, the use of improper sanding techniques or machines may also cause this undesirable outcome in an auto body painting project. Having said that, excessive sand scratches can be resolved by removing the scratches and the grit scratches with a 1500 grit wet and dry sandpaper and restoring the paint finish gloss using a recommended product.
Taking all these possible painting failures into account, you should never venture into a DIY auto body painting project if you don't have the right skills to paint a vehicle. Or else, you will risk ruining your car's existing paint job, which may cost you a lot of money to restore with the help of an auto body paint expert. The good news, however, is that you can learn to paint cars all by yourself, just like me, by reading and learning from the right resources.
